Dr. Jennifer Hubbert presented “The Fun We Love to Hate: The Politics of Illicit Pleasure” over the summer at the European Association of Social Anthropologists. Now, Jennifer will discuss with Deviant Ollam what it’s like to be a liberal anthropologist, examining the rise of liberal gun owners, in a liberal discipline that defines the study of guns as the study of gun control. Drawing upon data from close to seventy in-depth interviews, Jennifer will reflect on how academia is challenged by the attractions of gun ownership and the ways in which liberal gun ownership challenges the good guys/bad guys framing of gun ownership. She'll also discuss how this research oftentimes sits uncomfortably within the norms of anthropological scholarship. A Q&A session will follow the presentation. Her research is funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities.
